Discovering Novel Fighter Combat Maneuvers in Simulation: Simulating Test Pilot Creativity
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reports the authors' ongoing experience with a system for discovering novel fighter combat maneuvers, using a genetics-based machine learning process, and combat simulation. In effect, the genetic learning system in this application is taking the place of a test pilot, in discovering complex maneuvers from experience. The goal of this work is distinct from that of many other studies, in that innovation, and discovery of novelty, is, in itself valuable. This makes the details of aims and techniques somewhat distinct from other genetics-based machine learning research. The paper discusses the details of the application, and the motivations and details of the techniques employed. Results are presented for systems where one player adapts to a fixed strategy opponent, and where two players co-adapt. General implications of this work for other adaptive behavior applications are discussed.

متن کاملDynamic strength capabilities of small-stature females to perform high-performance flight tasks.
BACKGROUND Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division investigated the abilities of small-stature females (< or = 120 lb.) to fly under G-stress using the Dynamic Flight Simulator (DFS) and its tactical fight/attack cockpit, displays and controls. The objective was to determine if these individuals possess sufficient upper-body muscular endurance to perform tasks required during fighter-pilot t...
متن کاملA flexible rule-based framework for pilot performance analysis in air combat simulation systems
Air combat simulation systems (ACSSs) are developed to train fighter pilots (trainees) in a virtual combat environment. In general, an ACSS consists of the following stages: planning the scenario, training, flight analysis, and performance evaluation. In this paper, the details of the framework, which is developed to analyze and evaluate the performance of the trainees, is introduced. First, th...
متن کاملComputational Aircraft and Armament Stability and Control Techniques Applied to the F - 16
This paper documents some of the early results of a three year project to develop a computational method for accurately determining static and dynamic stability and control derivatives of a fighter with various weapons configurations as well as the aircraft response to pilot input. In this first year of the project computational data is gathered for a rigid F-16 with no control surface movement...
